How to Write Popular Articles: Google Trends and Evergreen Articles

Everyone who is a writer probably dreams of having that "magic" article that generates thousands of hits within its first few days, or, better yet, goes viral and receives hundreds of thousands or millions of visitors. However, what's really important is just writing popular quality articles. Let's explore some options available for writing a more popular article.

Google Trends

Trends are what is popular in the here and now. Just because something is popular right now doesn't mean it will remain popular. That being said, Google Trends is a great resource to use to write about what is currently "hot." These articles may do well for a few days or even a few weeks or months, but it's rare that something trendy will remain popular for the long haul. Google Trends is a tool you can use to find out some of the most popular things people are searching on Google, one of the most used search engines in existence.

Simply type http://Google.com/trends into your toolbar.

It will take you to a page displaying the top ten "Hot Searches" according to the most recent statistics for what people are searching for. At the time this article is being written, the top ten searches on Google are:

Hot Searches (USA)

1. savannah brinson

2. rose bowl 2012

3. drew brees

4. kathy griffin

5. jenny mccarthy

6. rick santorum

7. pope joan

8. december 21 2012

9. ryan seacrest

10. mayan calendar

You can click on the "More Hot Searches" link to see the top twenty most searched terms. Why are these items popular at the moment? Well, some of these things I have personally never heard of, to be frank; however, some have to do with current events. Since it's now 2012, many people have heard the rumor about the Mayan calendar ending in December of 2012 (December 21, 2012 is also obviously a hot search) due to the end of the Earth or civilization as we know it, and want to investigate that. Perhaps people are worried or skeptical, but, for whatever the reasons, this is currently a very hot topic and I assume it may be throughout the year.

Other popular searches, such as the Rose Bowl, may be due to current events or the season. Kathy Griffin and Jenny McCarthy were recently hosts for New Year's Eve television shows, so they may have intrigued many people who would like to find out more information about them.

According to Google Trends, "With Hot Searches, you can see a snapshot of what’s on the public’s collective mind by viewing the fastest-rising searches for different points of time. You can see a list of today’s top 40 fastest-rising search queries in the U.S. You can also select a recent date in history to see what the top rising searches were and what the search activity looked like over the course of that day. Hot Searches are updated hourly."

"How does Google Trends work?: Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results – our Search Volume Index graph.

"Located beneath the Search Volume Index graph is our News reference volume graph. This graph shows you the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories. When Google Trends detects a spike in the volume of news stories for a particular search term, it labels the graph and displays the headline of an automatically selected Google News story written near the time of that spike. Currently, only English-language headlines are displayed, but we hope to support non-English headlines in the future.

"Below the search and news volume graphs, Trends displays the top regions, cities, and languages in which people searched for the first search term you entered."

Evergreen Articles

As aforementioned, hot topics often include trends or popular current events. Anytime there is an event such as the Superbowl, an election, a holiday, etc, people will undoubtedly be searching for more information regarding such.

Evergreen articles are those considered to remain popular over time, such as holiday articles (graduation/holiday/birthday gift ideas, Thanksgiving recipes, barbecue recipes for Memorial Day or the 4th of July, for example), saving money tends to be a popular subject (saving money on gas/electricity/grocery bills, travel deals, coupons and discounts), and other financial tips (how to be responsible with credit, how to get the best loans, which bank is the best, etc.), and others.

Dating, celebrities who remain popular, and other topics will continue to pull visitors for many years (and income as well).
