Why Should You Learn A Second (or Third) Language?

Many people have yearned to learn a new language. Whether it's simply to enrich oneself or to learn it for travel or a job, there are many reasons to learn a new language.

With the ease of travel and the vast amount of emigration in today's global society, it's becoming more and more widespread to hear different languages spoken in one area. Even in small towns there are different cultures and those who speak foreign languages. There are many reasons to learn new languages.

Love of a Culture

There are many people out there who want to learn a certain language simply because

they are fond of that particular culture. They want to embrace all they can about that culture, including the language. You can learn much about a people through their culture and language and fully immerse yourself by learning everything you can.

Travel

If you travel a lot, you might be interested in learning at least the basic language of that particular place. Learning how to ask for directions, how much things cost, and certain other staple words will help make your trip more pleasant and rewarding. Even relying on an advanced translator can sometimes have its downside. What if it breaks? Also, in certains regions the dialect is different. Sometimes it's more rewarding to oneself to simply learn the basics and use the translator for more difficult words and phrases. Also, knowing at least some of the language firsthand will make you feel more involved rather than just a visitor looking in.

To Enrich the Mind

Expanding one's mind is important. After all, the brain is a muscle. Without constant challenges it may get weak, so to speak. Learning a different language is a wonderful way to practice using your mind and expand your span of knowledge as a person. Often times learning a new language will open your eyes to why a culture is the way it is, because you will learn part of their ways as a people as well as the language. You may even pick up new hobbies you never knew of or never had interest in when learning a different language.

Learning a different language may open up more knowledge of your native tongue as well. You will be learning more about grammar and linguistics in general, so of course this will reflect back to your native language as well and provide a deeper understanding as a whole.

For Work Purposes

Perhaps it's an integral part of your job to know different languages. Translators and scholars may need to know another language

as an essential part of their job. Many occupations require knowing more than one language. Think about telephone operators, airport employees, travel guides, and even people at the stores, banks, and almost anywhere. Wouldn't it be rewarding and even essential in certain locations to know another language and to help others?

A nice reward that may follow learning other languages is that you will probably have more employment opportunities. Some occupations require knowing more than one language. For example, for those who need to travel for business purposes to foreign lands, or for those who negotiate with worldwide associates will benefit from knowing other languages.

How much more valuable would you be as an employee to know more than one language? Probably more valuable than someone who doesn't, right? Knowing more than one language may open up many doors for you, and may even help you get a higher paying job or a pay raise when evaluation time comes. It may even help you land that dream job that might not have been possible to obtain before.

Your Friend Speaks Another Language

Perhaps you met a dear person on vacation or through other travel, or even online, who does not speak your native language. Learning a new language to develop a friendship is a wonderful reason. They can help you learn through practice talking and chatting. This could also be true regarding a new neighbor. Maybe a new neighbor moved to your town from abroad and is having trouble assimilating. Learning their language may be a very rewarding experience for you!

To Impress People

Perhaps you are the type of person who really likes to impress people. To be able to fluently speak several different languages is definitely something impressive to me, and I would wager to many people as well. Yes, there are many people in this world that speak two or three different languages, or even more than that, but wouldn't you feel good being among them and having that knowledge?
